This course is very different from the HPLC Equipment Servicing Course. In this course, although we do consider problems arising from Instrumentation and the need for preventative maintenance, the main emphasis is on solving problems in the chromatography. This includes issues with the baseline, the back pressure, peak shape and retention times, and also problems with calibration. We discuss how to recognise faults which invalidate the results, and also how we can build in checks and balances to ensure that as many errors as possible are detected and corrected. At the end of the course we discuss a series of problem scenarios, and explain how to solve them from only seven key indicators. The course ends with an exercise to try this technique, and a discussion of the answers.
